This post takes a look at one of the oldest items in My Imagineering Library, an article entitled “Disneyland Is Good for You” by Charlie Hass, from the December 1978 issue of New West Magazine.
This interview with Imagineer John Hench is one of the earliest analyses of Disneyland and how the Imagineers create the “magical” experiences that guests enjoy when they visit Disney theme parks, and should be considered must reading for anyone interested in learning about Imagineering. It is also one of the first articles (if not THE first) to describe the idea of “reassurance” as one of the key hallmarks of Disney theme park design. In his foreword to Designing Disney: Imagineering and The Art of the Show, Marty Sklar describes this interview as “the single clearest analysis of Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom
ever printed, before this book”.
